The blue ice caves of Vatnajökull glacier are among the most spectacular natural wonders in Iceland — and the world. These shimmering caverns of ancient glacial ice glow with an intense, otherworldly blue light that photographs simply cannot do justice.
Blue ice caves are natural tunnels formed within glaciers by meltwater. They're found at the edges of Vatnajökull, Europe's largest glacier. The caves are "blue" because the dense, ancient ice absorbs all wavelengths of light except blue, which passes through and lights the cave from within.
Ice cave tours run from October to March/April. In summer, warmer temperatures make the caves structurally unstable and unsafe. The caves are at their most beautiful in December and January when they're coldest and most intensely blue. New caves form each year as old ones collapse.
You MUST book a guided tour — entering ice caves independently is extremely dangerous. Tours depart from the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon parking lot (a 5-hour drive from Reykjavík). A typical tour takes 3–5 hours including transport by Super Jeep to the cave entrance. Book months in advance.
Wear warm, waterproof layers — the cave temperature hovers around 0°C. Sturdy, waterproof boots with ankle support are essential (crampons are provided). Bring gloves, a warm hat, and a camera. Helmets are provided by tour operators.
The Katla Ice Cave near Vík is an alternative for visitors outside of blue ice cave season. It's available year-round and accessible by Super Jeep from the town of Vík. The colours are different (more ash-streaked grey-blue), but it's still a remarkable experience.
If you're visiting in summer and missing the blue caves, don't despair — glacier hiking on Sólheimajökull or Vatnajökull is available all year. The Into the Glacier tunnel system on Langjökull is also open year-round and offers an accessible ice cave experience.
